home-grown mint-condition hand-me-down
This is special. Not only is this 30 year old bike in almost mint condition (I have inside information that it belonged to the rider’s grandma, who never rode it), but it was made in Melbourne.
I guess it’s only been in the last 20 odd years that much of Australia’s manufacturing – including bike manufacturing – moved off-shore, and yet it already seems such a quaint novelty to find a locally manufactured bike. Not sure where this train of thought is taking me…something about a time when bike mechanics wore grey dust coats and bike helmets had not even been thought of… Enough of the nostalgia I hear you say, just show the bike! Oh sorry, yes, ahem, here it is.
The photo doesn’t really do it justice, I couldn’t get a good angle because it was sort squished in between a parked car and the other bike.
It has a gorgeous closed in chain guard that you can’t see here, but I did manage to capture the pin stripe detailing on the mud guard (I seem to be a bit mudguard fixated…what’s that about I wonder?)
